Peli

Hello, this is Peli from Hayama Woodworks!
Looking for a way to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life? Why not immerse yourself in a spoon-making workshop?
At Hayama Woodworks, we’re excited to host a Spoon-Making Workshop, where you can discover the beauty of wood while enjoying a deeply meditative experience. This workshop isn’t just about crafting—it’s about finding serenity in the process ✨

What Makes Our Spoon-Making Workshop Special?

1. Perfect for Beginners – Just Bring Yourself!

No prior woodworking experience? No problem! We provide all the materials and tools you’ll need. Even if you’ve never handled a chisel before, you’ll feel right at home with guidance from our skilled craftsman, Mr. Ohara.
“Woodworking seems too hard…” If this thought has crossed your mind, this workshop will change that!

2. Savor the Beauty of Natural Wood

This time, we’ll be working with Mulberry Wood, known for its resilience and elegant sheen. Feel the texture of natural wood as your spoon takes shape. Over time, mulberry wood darkens and gains character, making it a joy to use 🍂

Expect to work with other types of wood as well—each offering its unique charm!

3. A Meditative Escape

Spoon-making requires focus, helping you forget everyday distractions. Enveloped in the scent of wood, you’ll find this experience both relaxing and refreshing. Once your spoon is complete, a sense of accomplishment awaits you!

Step-by-Step: The Art of Spoon Making

One of the most rewarding aspects of this workshop is unveiling the natural beauty of wood with each carve. Let’s walk you through the process.

1. Trace the Template

Start by transferring your spoon’s design onto a wooden board. Precise tracing ensures a flawless result.

2. Cut Out the Shape

Using a saw, cut the wood into a rough shape:

  • First, cut the top face in straight lines.
  • Next, shape the sides with precision.

Pro Tip: Take your time during this step for a smoother finish later.

3. Carve the Bowl

Use a gouge to carefully carve out the bowl section of the spoon:

  • Carve in four directions, following the grain and adjusting for reverse grain.
  • Aim for a depth of about 6mm.

Check your progress frequently with a ruler to maintain symmetry and depth.

4. Refine the Outer Shape

Using chisels, shape the outer curve of the spoon to match the carved bowl. This step determines the elegance of the final design. Balance is key, so proceed carefully while checking the overall symmetry.

5. Perfect the Handle

The handle is smoothed and shaped using spokeshaves and specialty planes. Fixing the wood with clamps allows for a steady and precise finish. Focus on creating a comfortable grip while keeping the surface silky smooth.

6. Final Adjustments

Carefully compare the spoon to your original design, making any necessary tweaks with chisels or planes. Running your fingers along the surface helps identify uneven areas that need attention.

7. Sand and Polish

The final step is sanding the surface to perfection. Sandpaper enhances the wood’s natural sheen and ensures a comfortable, polished finish. This step brings out the spoon’s true beauty.
