Hello, this is Ohara from Hayama Woodworks Studio (Hayasta). Today, I would like to share with you about zelkova wood, a material that I hold dear. Since the early days of my woodworking journey, I have been fascinated by zelkova and always wanted to work with it.
I remember when I was just starting out, I visited a woodworking exhibition at the Modern Art Museum Craft Gallery. There was a small shelf on display, and it was made entirely of quarter-sawn zelkova, which had a dignified appearance. The deep, refined dark brown color of zelkova was stunning, and it made me realize that such a beautiful wood existed in Japan. From that moment, I knew I wanted to work with zelkova one day, and I’ve been searching for it ever since.
Zelkova is such a rare wood! I didn’t know it had such a history behind it!
Yes, the encounter with wood is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Zelkova is hardly available on the market anymore, so finding it is really difficult.
Among Japanese hardwoods, only mulberry, buried wood, and zelkova offer the dark tones I particularly like. I always dreamed of using these woods, and I was finally able to acquire some zelkova.
The Charm of Zelkova – A Special Timber
Zelkova is hard and heavy, and when planed, it has a moist, glossy feel that imparts a certain refined elegance. The tactile response when carving it feels so satisfying, and it’s impossible not to appreciate the quality of the wood. Zelkova’s unique color and its changing tones over time are what make it stand out from other woods.
Historically, zelkova has been used in Japanese interiors as flooring pillars and furniture. However, in recent years, it is rarely available on the market. It’s a rare wood that’s difficult to find. One day, I encountered a piece of zelkova wood that had been felled in Hakone, and I decided to make use of it for a project. This was a truly once-in-a-lifetime encounter. I’ve kept it carefully stored, waiting to make something special with it.
The change in color over time is wonderful, right? It deepens and becomes richer, which makes it even more beautiful!
Over time, its color deepens, becoming more beautiful. It’s the perfect example of ancient patina developing with age.
Works Using Japanese Zelkova (Enju) – The “Goro Stool”
One of the first works I created using Japanese Zelkova (Enju) is the “Goro Stool” I am introducing here. This stool utilizes the natural characteristics of Enju wood, and I carefully carved the seat by hand, almost like a sculpture. By chiseling each piece, I created a finish that feels smooth to the touch and carries the warmth of handmade craftsmanship.
Additionally, an oil finish was applied to enhance the beauty of the wood grain. This stool is not just for sitting; its heaviness and stability make it incredibly attractive. It serves as a perfect bench to sit on when putting on shoes in the entrance, or even as a side table in the living room, offering versatility in design.
The Thoughts of Ohara – “It’s Hard to Sell, But…”
The wood of Enju deepens its color with use and develops a special “aged” appearance. This gradual change is one of the joys of working with Enju. It’s a bit sad to sell a piece made from Enju that I’ve worked on. If I kept it in my workshop, I could enjoy watching its changes over time… But, the pieces I currently have may be the last ones I can acquire. That’s why, I decided to sell this piece, hoping it will be appreciated by more people.
The Enju Stool – Bringing Warmth to Your Life
The “Goro Stool” I introduced is a special piece that can be used for a lifetime. Those who own it will be able to feel the warmth and natural beauty of Enju wood every day.
There are still some chunks left, so I can continue creating furniture using Enju. However, this stool may very well be the last piece made from this wood, so it’s a one-of-a-kind item you can only get now.
Enjoying Enju and Adding Warmth to Your Home
Finally, I encourage you to incorporate the “Goro Stool” into your life. This stool, made from Enju, allows you to experience the beauty of natural wood and enjoy the warmth of the material. As time goes by, you will be able to enjoy its color transformation as well.
This stool is priced at ¥44,000 (tax included) and is available for purchase. If you are interested, I encourage you to consider purchasing it.
